02 Jan Processes are the foundations of your Business.
Why entrepreneurs & small business owners are looking to their processes to increase sales & improve the customer experience
Processes used to be only for enterprise businesses, this is no longer the case. Small businesses need to get in on the action if they want to grab back time whilst scaling their business
How can a process help me scale my business I hear you ask…
Well, without a process you’ll be pulled in all sorts of directions. A process allows us to understand what we do & how we do it.
“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing” – W. Edwards Deming
I see small business owners who haven’t established organised business processes & systems all the time, their common complaints are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, struggle with direction, motivation & scaling income
Without robust process for all areas of your business, you’ll never know which areas of your business are working (therefore have value) and which ones need improvement to help you move your business forward.
Processes provide a clear roadmap to success, they allow you to assess what you can automate or outsource, and provide foundations for growth
So, where do you start….?
Visual mapping your processes is a great place to start
Visually outlining every stage of your business will help you create a coherent & effective journey for all everyone (customers, suppliers, freelancers & internal staff). A lot of people I work with discover a process that they weren’t even aware of – it’s such a brilliant exercise
There are so many ways to get your processes & tasks out of your head & documented but a simple list is great place to start.
Here’s a few to get you started;
Once the process areas have been defined, I encourage my clients to start writing each task on post it notes. Post it notes are brilliant, you can easily move them to change the order of the tasks as you remember tasks that you do (or don’t but should be doing).
As you progress, the long list of processes & tasks may feel overwhelming, don’t give up – it will identify everything you’ve been holding together without even noticing. When that realisation happens, take a moment to pat yourself on the back.
Once you have all your processes mapped visually you can progress to the next logical step, picking out tasks that you can automate, shortcut & improve.
Now it’s time to get some colour coordination going. One colour pen for automate, one colour for shortcut, another colour for review in detail/ improvement, last colour for human required. For each task, mark up as one of these colours.
Using this simple system, you’re now able to test if this is actually what’s happening as you work over the next few weeks, adjust if needed before implementing the automations & improvements.
Having processes helps everyone – your team, your customers & your suppliers. Investing in automation for what you don’t need to be involved with, will help you make every second of your working time count!
There are many FREE Systems that can help you build your business whilst maintaining your sanity and you profit.
